Meteors, commonly known as "shooting stars," are the visible streaks of light that occur when meteoroids enter Earth's atmosphere. Meteoroids are small rocky or metallic bodies, typically ranging from dust-sized particles to objects several meters in diameter. As a meteoroid enters the atmosphere, it compresses the air in front of it, causing the air to heat up and emit light. This phenomenon is what we observe as a meteor.

Meteors can vary in brightness and duration. Some are brief and faint, while others can be bright enough to be seen during the day. The brightness of a meteor depends on several factors, including the size and speed of the meteoroid, as well as the angle at which it enters the atmosphere.

When a meteoroid survives its passage through the atmosphere and lands on the Earth's surface, it is then called a meteorite. Meteorites can provide valuable information about the early solar system and the processes that shaped it.

Meteors are often associated with meteor showers, which occur when Earth passes through a stream of debris left by a comet. These showers can produce a large number of meteors over a short period, creating a spectacular display in the night sky. Some well-known meteor showers include the Perseids, Leonids, and Geminids.

The study of meteors and meteorites is known as meteoritics. This field of research helps scientists understand the composition and history of the solar system, as well as the processes that shape planetary bodies.
