Metallstruktur refers to the arrangement of atoms within a metallic material. This arrangement dictates many of the material's properties. Metals typically form crystalline structures, meaning their atoms are arranged in a highly ordered, repeating three-dimensional lattice. Common metallic crystal structures include body-centered cubic (BCC), face-centered cubic (FCC), and hexagonal close-packed (HCP).

In a BCC structure, atoms are located at each corner of a cube and one atom is at the center. Examples of BCC metals include iron (at room temperature), chromium, and tungsten. FCC structures have atoms at each corner and in the center of each face of the cube. Aluminum, copper, and gold are common FCC metals. HCP structures are characterized by layers of atoms arranged in a hexagonal pattern, with specific stacking sequences. Magnesium, zinc, and titanium often exhibit HCP structures.

The specific crystal structure of a metal significantly influences its mechanical properties, such as its ductility, strength, and hardness. For instance, FCC metals are generally more ductile than BCC or HCP metals due to the presence of more slip systems, which are planes along which atoms can slide past each other. Heat treatments and mechanical processing can alter the microstructure, which includes grain size, grain boundaries, and the presence of different phases, further impacting the overall properties of the metal.
