Metalizing is a thermal spray process used to apply a metallic coating onto a substrate. The goal is typically to protect the substrate from corrosion, wear, or heat, or to impart desirable electrical or thermal conductivity. Various metals and alloys can be used as feedstock, including zinc, aluminum, stainless steel, and bronze, depending on the desired properties of the coating.

The process involves melting the coating material, usually in the form of a wire or powder, and then atomizing it into fine droplets. These droplets are propelled at high velocity onto the prepared surface of the substrate. The impact causes the droplets to flatten and solidify, building up a dense and adherent coating. Different methods exist for metalizing, such as arc spraying, flame spraying, and plasma spraying, each offering distinct advantages in terms of temperature, particle velocity, and coating characteristics.

Surface preparation of the substrate is a critical step in metalizing to ensure good adhesion. This often involves cleaning to remove contaminants and roughening the surface through grit blasting to create a mechanical key for the coating. Metalizing coatings can significantly extend the lifespan of components, particularly in harsh environments like marine or industrial settings. Applications range from protecting structural steel bridges and offshore platforms to enhancing the performance of engine parts and electrical components.
