The primary goal of a meta-analysis is to provide a more robust and precise estimate of the effect of an intervention or the strength of an association than any single study could achieve on its own. This is accomplished by pooling data from individual studies, thereby increasing the overall sample size and statistical power.

The process typically involves several key steps. First, a comprehensive search for relevant literature is conducted to identify all eligible studies. Next, studies are screened for inclusion and exclusion criteria, ensuring that only high-quality, comparable research is included. The data from these studies are then extracted and synthesized. Statistical techniques are applied to combine the effect sizes from each study, often using a weighted average where studies with larger sample sizes or greater precision receive more weight.

Meta-analyses are widely used across various disciplines, including medicine, psychology, education, and social sciences. They are particularly valuable for summarizing evidence, identifying inconsistencies between studies, and informing clinical practice or policy decisions. While powerful, meta-analyses are also subject to certain limitations, such as the potential for publication bias (where studies with significant findings are more likely to be published) and heterogeneity (differences between studies that may make direct comparison difficult).
