Metacontext is a term used to describe the higher-level set of conditions that surround and influence the interpretation of a given context or content. It refers to information about contexts themselves—how, where, when, and by whom a piece of content is produced and used—and the broader environments that shape meaning, such as culture, history, discourse, power relations, and user goals. In information science and data governance, metacontext encompasses provenance, metadata schemas, and the circumstances of data creation and consumption that affect retrieval, evaluation, and reuse.

In literary and media studies, metacontext tracks the frames within which a text is produced and read, including authorial intent, publication milieu, genre expectations, and audience assumptions, aiding analysis beyond the immediate text. In computing and artificial intelligence, metacontext can mean the contextual information about data and tasks that informs preprocessing, labeling, model selection, evaluation, and deployment, such as domain, user role, privacy constraints, and intended use cases.

Metacontext is distinct from context in that it concerns the context of the context; it is meta-level information used to interpret or manage primary contextual data. Applications include metadata governance, explainable AI, archival practices, and critical discourse analysis. Challenges include inconsistent definitions, measurement difficulty, potential biases in what is recorded as metacontext, and privacy considerations when exposing contextual information.
