Metaandmed is the information that describes and gives context to data assets. It includes details about the creator, creation date, format, size, location, rights, and the relationships between data items. In practice, metaandmed helps users and systems understand what a data item is and how it can be used.

Its primary purposes are to facilitate discovery, interpretation, and reuse; to support data governance, preservation, and interoperability; and to enable automated processing by information systems. Metadata can be categorized into descriptive metadata (who, what, when, where), structural metadata (how data are organized and related), and administrative metadata (rights, provenance, preservation actions).

Standards and schemas guide how metadata is structured and exchanged. Common schemas include Dublin Core for general resources; MODS and MARC for library catalogs; PREMIS for preservation metadata; EXIF for image files; and IPTC for media. Metadata can be embedded in files or stored in separate catalogs and may be exposed through harvesting protocols like OAI-PMH or via application programming interfaces.

In practice, metaandmed are used across libraries, archives, museums, research data repositories, and government records to improve searchability, data linking, and reuse. The use of persistent identifiers (such as DOIs or URNs), authority files, and controlled vocabularies enhances reliability and interoperability between systems and organizations.

Challenges include ensuring accuracy, completeness, and consistency; managing multilingual descriptions; protecting privacy where sensitive information is involved; and handling versioning and long-term preservation. Effective metadata management relies on standardized schemas, regular quality checks, clear documentation, and coordination among data producers, curators, and users.
