Metaadaptation is the process by which the capacity to adapt is itself modified or optimized. It describes higher‑order adjustments to adaptive processes, rather than immediate responses to a single environmental change. A system exhibits metaadaptation when it changes how it learns, evolves, or reorganizes its functioning in anticipation of or in reaction to different contexts.

In biology, metaadaptation encompasses mechanisms that influence evolvability and the speed or direction of adaptation. Examples include changes in mutation rates, genetic canalization, and the evolution of phenotypic plasticity, which itself enables future adaptation to diverse environments. Metaadaptive traits can increase a lineage’s potential to respond to unforeseen challenges.

In machine learning and artificial intelligence, metaadaptation is closely tied to meta-learning or learning-to-learn. Here, models acquire strategies for rapid adaptation to new tasks, domains, or data distributions. Approaches include adjusting learning rates, tuning hyperparameters, or training networks to leverage prior experience for efficient transfer and fine-tuning.

In psychology and cognitive science, metaadaptation refers to metacognitive or regulatory processes that alter how individuals learn or solve problems. This can involve monitoring performance, selecting strategies, or reorganizing cognitive resources to improve adaptability across tasks.
