Merkaptans, also known as thiols, are a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of a thiol functional group. The thiol group consists of a sulfur atom bonded to a hydrogen atom, with the general formula R-SH, where R represents an alkyl or aryl group. These compounds are structurally similar to alcohols, where the oxygen atom is replaced by a sulfur atom.

Merkaptans are well-known for their distinctive and often strong, unpleasant odors. This is particularly true for lower molecular weight merkaptans, which are often associated with the smell of garlic, onions, or even skunk spray. Despite their odor, merkaptans play important roles in various biological and industrial processes. For instance, the amino acid cysteine, a building block of proteins, contains a thiol group. Disulfide bonds, formed between two thiol groups, are crucial for maintaining the three-dimensional structure of many proteins.

In industry, merkaptans are used as additives in natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to detect leaks. Their potent odor allows for the identification of even small amounts of these otherwise odorless gases. They are also employed in the synthesis of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and polymers. While some merkaptans are toxic, their specific properties and reactivity make them valuable in diverse applications.
