Mercaptans, also known as thiols, are a class of organic compounds containing a sulfhydryl functional group ( R-SH). The R group can be an alkyl or aryl group. They are characterized by a distinctive, often unpleasant, odor, even at very low concentrations. This strong odor is a result of the sulfur atom's high polarizability.

The simplest mercaptan is methanethiol (CH3SH). Other common examples include ethanethiol (C2H5SH) and propanethiol (C3H7SH). Mercaptans are found naturally in various sources, including crude oil, natural gas, and decaying organic matter. They are also produced during biological processes, such as protein metabolism.

Industrially, mercaptans are used as odorants in natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Because these fuels are naturally odorless, mercaptans are added to make leaks detectable by smell, thus enhancing safety. They also find applications in the synthesis of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and polymers. In some cases, mercaptans are used as antioxidants or as additives in lubricating oils.

The chemical reactivity of mercaptans is similar to that of alcohols, with the sulfur atom being more nucleophilic than the oxygen atom in alcohols. They can undergo oxidation to form disulfides (R-S-S-R), sulfinic acids, and sulfonic acids. Mercaptans are acidic, but generally weaker than corresponding alcohols. Their characteristic smell, though often perceived negatively, serves as a crucial safety warning in everyday applications.
