merituulia
Merituulia is a Finnish term that translates to "sea breeze" or "sea wind." It specifically refers to the cooling breeze that originates from the sea or a large body of water and moves towards the land. This phenomenon is common in coastal regions and is caused by the differential heating of land and water. During the day, land heats up faster than water. The warmer air above the land rises, creating an area of lower pressure. Cooler, denser air from over the water then flows in to replace it, creating the merituulia. This effect is most noticeable on warm, sunny days and can provide significant relief from heat, especially during summer months. The strength and consistency of the merituulia depend on factors such as temperature differences, wind patterns, and the size of the water body. In Finland, where the country has an extensive coastline and numerous lakes, merituulia plays a role in the local climate and is often appreciated by residents for its cooling properties. The term is also used metaphorically in some contexts to describe a fresh, invigorating influence or a new direction.
