The name derives from Finnish words: *mere* (meaning "string" or "cord"), *sola* (a type of reed or cane), and *pihi* (a type of flute), though the exact etymology varies by region. These instruments are often handcrafted, reflecting a blend of indigenous and Scandinavian influences.

Meresolapihusts typically consist of a wooden body, often carved from birch or pine, with a series of holes along its length to produce different pitches. Unlike conventional flutes, they may incorporate additional elements such as a membrane or a small drum-like component, creating a hybrid sound that combines wind and percussion.
