Meremärgid are navigational aids used at sea to guide ships and boats. They are a crucial part of maritime safety, helping mariners determine their position, avoid hazards, and safely enter ports. Historically, meremärgid were primarily natural landmarks like prominent hills or rock formations. Over time, these evolved into artificial structures such as lighthouses, buoys, and beacons.

Lighthouses are tall towers equipped with powerful lights that emit distinctive flashing patterns. These patterns are unique to each lighthouse, allowing sailors to identify their location. Buoys are floating markers anchored to the seabed. They come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, each signifying a specific meaning. For example, red buoys typically indicate the starboard (right) side of a channel when entering from seaward, while green buoys mark the port (left) side. Cardinal marks indicate the direction of safe water in relation to the mark. Special marks, often yellow, denote areas with specific hazards or features like speed limits or mooring areas.

Beacons are fixed structures, often erected on land or shallow water, that display lights or other visual signals. They serve a similar purpose to lighthouses and buoys but are permanently fixed. The effective use of meremärgid relies on standardized systems like the IALA (International Association of Lighthouse Authorities) maritime buoyage system, ensuring consistency worldwide. Mariners consult nautical charts and the IALA system's descriptions to interpret the meaning of each meremärk they encounter.
