Merda is the Italian and Portuguese term for feces or excrement. The word derives from the Latin merda and has cognates in several Romance languages, such as Spanish mierda and French merde. In ordinary speech, merda refers to waste from digestion; in formal or medical contexts, the terms feces or stool are preferred.

In Italian and Portuguese, merda also functions as a vulgar term and intensifier, used in expressions to express anger, disbelief, or contempt. Its use is considered inappropriate in formal discourse and in many public settings, though it appears in literature, films, and music as part of colloquial speech.

Biologically, feces are the waste product of the digestive tract. They consist mainly of water, gut bacteria, and indigestible materials, with solids including cellulose, proteins, fats, and bile pigments that give a typical brown color. The composition and appearance vary with diet, health, and gut microbiota.

Public health and sanitation: Historically, human waste has carried disease; the development of toilets, sewerage, and wastewater treatment drastically reduced fecal-oral transmission of pathogens. Proper disposal and hygiene continue to be central to sanitation in all societies.

In everyday use, merda can carry strong emotional charge when used as an insult or expletive; in neutral contexts it remains simply a term for feces.
