Meniszkuszszakadás, often referred to as a torn meniscus, is a common knee injury involving the cartilage within the knee joint. The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of tough, flexible cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between the shinbone (tibia) and the thighbone (femur). There are two menisci in each knee: the medial meniscus on the inside and the lateral meniscus on the outside.

Tears can occur due to sudden twisting or impact, often during sports or physical activities. They can also develop gradually over time due to degenerative changes, especially in older individuals. Symptoms typically include pain in the knee, swelling, stiffness, a clicking or popping sensation, and difficulty fully extending or bending the knee. The location and severity of the tear influence the specific symptoms experienced.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, where a doctor assesses the knee's range of motion and checks for tenderness. Imaging tests, such as MRI scans, are often used to confirm the diagnosis and determine the extent of the tear. Treatment depends on the type, size, and location of the tear, as well as the patient's age and activity level.

Nonsurgical treatments may include rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE), pain medication, and physical therapy to strengthen the surrounding muscles and improve stability. In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary, typically arthroscopic surgery, to repair or remove the damaged portion of the meniscus. The recovery process varies, but rehabilitation is crucial for regaining full knee function.
