Menedékkérk is a nonstandard or colloquial term found in some Hungarian texts to refer to a person who seeks asylum. The standard terms in Hungarian are menedékkérő, meaning an asylum seeker, and menedékkérelem, meaning an asylum application. The concept describes a person who has fled their home country due to a well-founded fear of persecution or serious harm and requests international protection in another country.

Asylum seekers submit an application to the competent national authorities to determine whether they qualify for refugee status or another form of international protection. In the European Union, the process is shaped by national laws in conjunction with EU instruments, including the Dublin Regulation, which determines which member state handles a given application. The procedure typically includes an initial screening, a personal interview, and a formal decision on the protection request. Outcomes can include recognition as a refugee, recognition of subsidiary protection, or a rejection with possible avenues for appeal or null or alternative protection, depending on the jurisdiction.
