Membranör is a Swedish term that translates to "membrane ear" and refers to a specific type of auditory prosthesis. It is a type of middle ear implant designed to address certain types of hearing loss. Unlike traditional hearing aids that amplify sound externally, membranör devices are surgically implanted and directly vibrate the ossicles (the small bones in the middle ear) or the round window membrane. This mechanism bypasses problems in the outer or middle ear that may be preventing sound from being transmitted effectively.

The primary candidates for membranör implantation are individuals with moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss or conductive hearing loss that cannot be adequately treated with conventional hearing aids or surgery. The device typically consists of an internal component, surgically placed within the middle ear, and an external sound processor, worn behind the ear. The external processor captures sound and converts it into electrical signals, which are then transmitted wirelessly to the internal component. This internal component then vibrates the structures in the middle ear to create sound perception.

The development of membranör technology aims to provide improved sound quality, reduced feedback, and a more natural listening experience compared to some external hearing aids. As with any surgical procedure and implantable device, there are potential risks and benefits that are discussed with patients prior to implantation.
