Membranfluiditeten refers to the fluidity or mobility of the lipid bilayer that forms the basic structure of biological membranes. This fluidity is essential for many membrane functions, including transport of substances across the membrane, cell signaling, and cell division. The fluidity of a membrane is influenced by several factors, primarily the composition of the lipids within the bilayer.

The types of fatty acids that make up the phospholipids are a key determinant. Unsaturated fatty acids, which have one or more double bonds in their hydrocarbon chains, introduce kinks. These kinks prevent the fatty acid chains from packing tightly together, thus increasing fluidity. Conversely, saturated fatty acids lack double bonds and have straight chains that can pack closely, reducing fluidity.

Another important factor is cholesterol. In animal cells, cholesterol molecules are interspersed among the phospholipid tails. At higher temperatures, cholesterol restricts the movement of phospholipids, making the membrane less fluid. At lower temperatures, cholesterol disrupts the close packing of phospholipids, preventing the membrane from becoming too rigid and thus increasing fluidity. This acts as a buffer, helping to maintain a relatively constant membrane fluidity over a range of temperatures.

The fluidity of the membrane also affects the movement of proteins embedded within it. While some proteins are anchored in place, many are free to diffuse laterally within the lipid bilayer, a concept known as the fluid mosaic model. This mobility is crucial for proteins to interact with each other, forming complexes or participating in signaling pathways. Changes in membrane fluidity can therefore have significant consequences for cellular processes.
