Membraanprotsess, also known as membrane processing, refers to a group of separation techniques that utilize semi-permeable membranes to separate components from a fluid (liquid or gas). These membranes act as selective barriers, allowing certain molecules or particles to pass through while retaining others based on their size, charge, or other properties. The driving force for separation can be pressure, concentration difference, or electrical potential.

Common types of membrane processes include microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis. Microfiltration is used to remove particles and bacteria, ultrafiltration separates macromolecules and colloids, nanofiltration removes dissolved salts and divalent ions, and reverse osmosis achieves the highest level of purification by removing nearly all dissolved solids. Other membrane processes include electrodialysis, which uses ion-exchange membranes and an electric field to separate ions, and pervaporation, used for separating liquid mixtures based on differences in vapor pressure and membrane affinity.

Membrane processes are widely applied across various industries, including water and wastewater treatment, food and beverage production, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and chemical processing. They offer advantages such as energy efficiency, gentle processing conditions, and high product purity. The selection of a specific membrane process depends on the characteristics of the feed stream and the desired separation outcome. Membrane fouling, where the membrane surface becomes blocked by retained substances, is a significant challenge that requires appropriate cleaning and maintenance strategies.
