megállóval is the instrumental form of the Hungarian noun megálló, which means a stop point or stopping place. In everyday speech it is used to describe traveling or moving with a stop. The phrase translates literally into English as “with a stop” and appears in contexts such as bus routes, public transit descriptions, and traffic regulations.

In municipal transport, megálló refers to bus stops, tram stops or train stations, and the instrumental form megállóval is frequently used in schedules and announcements. For example, a public announcement might say, “Ez a busz a megállóval széria 3 között halad,” meaning “This bus runs between stop 3 and 4.” It is also common in traffic law where it denotes the act of stopping a vehicle at a designated halt, for instance, “A közúti dugó magába foglalja a megállóval kapcsolatos szabályokat.”

The word derives from the verb megáll (to stop) combined with the suffix –ó which nominalizes it. The instrumental case ending –val attaches to nouns, turning the noun into a grammatical instrument. Its usage extends to metaphorical contexts, such as “hámi irodalmi megállóval” (with a literary pause), where the concept of a deliberate pause is applied figuratively.
