Megalvadás is a Hungarian term that translates to "coagulation" or "thickening" in English. It refers to the process by which a liquid, most commonly blood, undergoes a transformation from a fluid state to a semi-solid or solid state. This phenomenon is crucial in various biological and industrial contexts.

In biology, megalvadás is most prominently observed in blood. When a blood vessel is damaged, a complex cascade of events is initiated, leading to the formation of a blood clot. This process, known as hemostasis, involves platelets adhering to the site of injury and then forming a plug. Simultaneously, a series of proteins in the plasma, called clotting factors, are activated in a chain reaction. This culminates in the conversion of fibrinogen, a soluble protein, into fibrin, which forms a meshwork that traps blood cells and platelets, thereby solidifying the blood and stopping bleeding. This physiological megalvadás is vital for survival.
