Megakarüotsüütide refers to large multinucleated cells found in the bone marrow. These cells are the precursors to platelets, which are crucial for blood clotting. Megakarüotsüütide are characterized by their abundant cytoplasm, which is often granular, and their significantly larger size compared to other bone marrow cells. They are terminally differentiated cells, meaning they have reached their final stage of development and will not divide further.

The formation of megakarüotsüütide, a process known as megakarüotsütopoeisis, is a complex regulated pathway. This process is influenced by various growth factors and cytokines, with thrombopoietin being the primary regulator. Thrombopoietin stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells into megakaryocyte progenitors, which then mature into megakarüotsüütide. Once mature, megakarüotsüütide extend long cytoplasmic projections called proplatelets into the blood sinuses of the bone marrow. These proplatelets fragment into numerous small, anucleated platelets.

The number and activity of megakarüotsüütide can be affected by certain medical conditions. For instance, conditions like immune thrombocytopenic purpura can lead to an increased number of megakarüotsüütide as the body attempts to compensate for platelet destruction. Conversely, certain myelodysplastic syndromes may show a decrease in megakarüotsüütide or the presence of abnormally shaped megakarüotsüütide.
