megabasepair
A megabasepair, often abbreviated as Mbp, is a unit of length used in molecular biology to measure the size of DNA sequences. It is equivalent to one million base pairs. A base pair consists of two nucleotides that form a "rung" of the DNA ladder, with adenine (A) always pairing with thymine (T), and guanine (G) always pairing with cytosine (C). Therefore, one megabasepair represents a sequence of one million such pairs.
The megabasepair unit is commonly employed when discussing the genomes of organisms. For instance, the human
In addition to genome size, megabasepairs are used to describe the length of chromosomes and large DNA
