A megabasepair, often abbreviated as Mbp, is a unit of length used in molecular biology to measure the size of DNA sequences. It is equivalent to one million base pairs. A base pair consists of two nucleotides that form a "rung" of the DNA ladder, with adenine (A) always pairing with thymine (T), and guanine (G) always pairing with cytosine (C). Therefore, one megabasepair represents a sequence of one million such pairs.

The megabasepair unit is commonly employed when discussing the genomes of organisms. For instance, the human genome is approximately 3,200 Mbp long. Similarly, the genomes of bacteria are typically measured in the range of a few Mbp, while the genomes of larger eukaryotes can extend to hundreds or even thousands of Mbp. This unit helps in comparing the overall size and complexity of different genomes.
