Materials photographs are photographic records of materials intended to document appearance, structure, condition, and behavior of substances in contexts such as materials science, manufacturing, archaeology, and conservation. They provide visual documentation that supports analysis, comparison, and archival preservation.

They combine close-range photography with controlled lighting to reveal surface texture, color, microstructural features, and defects. In practice, images may be taken at macro scales, with raking light, oblique lighting, or cross-polarized illumination to highlight topography, strain patterns, or birefringence. Additional modalities may include infrared or ultraviolet illumination to bring out features not visible under normal light.

Equipment and workflow: a camera with macro capability, a stable mount, adjustable lighting, and a scale bar; color targets for color fidelity; careful calibration of white balance and exposure; and thorough metadata: material identity, sample position, lighting setup, date, and operator.

Applications: documentation for quality control, failure analysis, material identification, archival records for museums and libraries, conservation and restoration, and scientific publications.

Standards and best practices: provide scale and orientation in every image, use non-destructive methods when possible, archive images in lossless formats, attach descriptive metadata, and follow institution-specific protocols.
