Materialbehov, or material needs, refers to the amount of materials required to carry out a production plan in manufacturing and supply chain management. It is a central input for planning and procurement.

In practice, materialbehov is determined by converting the finished product into its component requirements using a bill of materials (BOM) and linking this to the master production schedule. This yields gross requirements, which are then adjusted for on-hand inventory and scheduled receipts to produce net requirements.

Key concepts include safety stock to absorb uncertainty and lead times for procurement or production. Planning is commonly performed in ERP systems through material requirements planning (MRP) or MRP II modules, which calculate when and how much to order or manufacture.

The result is a set of planned orders or purchase requisitions that align the production plan with the inventory strategy, aiming to balance stock levels, service levels, and costs.

Challenges include demand variability, design changes, supplier disruptions, and obsolescence. Effective management of materialbehov depends on accurate data, frequent reviews, and alignment among sales, production, and purchasing.

Example: If a product requires two bolts and one panel per unit and the plan is to produce 100 units, gross requirements are 200 bolts and 100 panels. After considering on-hand stock and scheduled receipts, net requirements indicate the quantities to order or produce.
