matchconstraint

Matchconstraint is a term used in constraint-based layout systems to describe a dimension (width or height) that is not assigned a fixed value or content-based size, but is determined by constraints within the layout. When a dimension is set to match_constraint, it can expand or shrink to satisfy the constraints and available space.

In Android’s ConstraintLayout, a view’s dimension can be FIXED, WRAP_CONTENT, MATCH_CONSTRAINT, or MATCH_PARENT. MATCH_CONSTRAINT means the size is computed based on constraints on both sides (left and right, or top and bottom) and other rules such as minimum and maximum sizes, aspect ratios, and bias. In XML, a dimension is typically set to 0dp to indicate match_constraint for that axis. If both sides are constrained, the view will fill the space between them, subject to limits. A dimension ratio can also tie width to height, further influencing the result when in match_constraint mode.

There are several modes associated with match_constraint, including spread (the default, fills the available space between constraints), wrap (constrains within content and constraints with limits), and percent (size as a percentage of the available space). The exact behavior depends on the library version and configuration of constraints.

Usage considerations include the effect of minimum and maximum sizes, margins, and view chaining on the computed size. Match_constraint supports responsive layouts by letting dimensions adapt to screen size and content constraints rather than relying on fixed values.
