Matbuat refers to the printing press, printing houses, and the publishing industry in historical Arabic, Ottoman, and Malay-speaking contexts. The term is derived from the Arabic word matbaʿah (مطبعة), meaning “printing house,” and entered other languages through Ottoman Turkish matbaa and related Malay/Indonesian spellings such as matbaat or matbuat. In usage today, matbuat is often encountered in historical or scholarly writing to denote the system and institutions responsible for reproducing texts.

Historically, matbuat encompasses the means and networks by which texts are produced and distributed, including the transition from woodblock printing to movable type and mechanical presses. Although movable type originated in East Asia and Gutenberg’s press popularized mass book production in Europe, the spread of modern matbuat in the Muslim world and in Malay-speaking regions occurred as part of broader reforms, colonial contact, and the establishment of schools, governments, and private publishing houses. Printing houses produced religious texts, educational materials, official documents, newspapers, and periodicals, contributing to literacy, public discourse, and social and political change.

In the Malay-speaking world, historical references to matbuat often describe early presses and publishing enterprises that produced Malay-language books and periodicals. Over time, everyday language shifted toward terms such as percetakan (printing) and penerbitan (publishing), but matbuat remains a useful label in historical contexts for the broader printing and publishing ecosystem.

Today, the term is largely historical or specialized, with contemporary references to printing and publishing more commonly using localized terms. Nevertheless, matbuat is foundational to the development of mass communication, literacy, and the dissemination of knowledge in regions influenced by Arabic, Ottoman, and Malay linguistic and cultural traditions.
