Mataram refers to a succession of Javanese Islamic kingdoms that flourished in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The first Mataram, often called the Mataram Sultanate of Yogyakarta, was founded in the 16th century by Sultan Agung. This powerful kingdom played a significant role in Javanese history, resisting Dutch colonial influence for a considerable period. Internal conflicts and the eventual intervention of the Dutch East India Company led to its fragmentation.
