Masternyckelsystem, or master key system, is a mechanical access-control concept used to manage keys and locks within a building or facility. It enables multiple predefined keys to open a set of locks, while preserving restricted access for other keys. The system is designed to balance convenience with security by allowing both individual, change-key access and coordinated, higher-level access.

The basic idea is hierarchical keying. Each lock is cut to operate with a change key, while some locks also open with a higher-level master key. In larger installations, several levels may exist, such as change keys, sub-master keys, master keys, and potentially a grand master key. The arrangement creates zones or groups of locks that share a common access pattern, allowing building managers to grant or restrict entry without issuing a new key for every lock.

A master key system relies on compatible locking hardware, typically pin-tumbler, disc-tumbler, or wafer-type cylinders, with key bitting combinations that define which keys open which locks. Security is closely tied to key control: restricted keyways, controlled duplication, and careful record-keeping. Proper design also considers future expansion, compatibility with existing hardware, and regular auditing to prevent unauthorized key copies.

Applications are common in office buildings, hospitals, universities, and property management where many doors must be opened by a limited set of people. Benefits include reduced key rings, centralized access control, and easier rekeying of lost keys. Risks include potential exposure of master keys and the need for ongoing maintenance and security management to prevent compromise.
