A mass organization is an organized group designed to mobilize and coordinate active participation of large numbers of people around a common political, social, or civic goal. They typically operate to bridge a political movement and the wider public, mobilizing supporters beyond formal party or government structures. They can be independent civil society groups or affiliated with a political party, a state, or a social movement.

The term has roots in socialist and communist practice, where mass organizations were created to mobilize workers, peasants, students, and other strata. Historically, examples include youth leagues, trade unions, peasant associations, and women's or veterans' federations, sometimes organized under the party's direction or the state. In other contexts, mass organizations appear in labor, professional, student, and community associations that aim to mobilize membership for campaigns or service delivery.

Functions include recruitment, political education, information dissemination, organizing protests or campaigns, providing social services, and acting as intermediaries between the leadership and the wider public. Their structure is usually hierarchical but designed to democratize membership and participation; leadership may be elected, but agendas are often guided by a parent organization.

Criticisms emphasize potential instrumentalization or co-optation by governing parties, risk of top-down control, suppression of dissent, and conflicts between mass organizations and civil liberties. In liberal democracies, mass organizations are typically part of civil society, including unions, professional associations, and NGOs; in authoritarian regimes they may function as controlled channels for mobilization.
