Massiidid are mosques in the Estonian language, serving as places of worship for Muslims. The word massiidid is the plural form, with massiid as the singular; the term is derived from the Arabic masjid, meaning “place of prostration.” In English, the corresponding term is mosque.

Historically, mosques originated in the early Islamic period and have developed a wide range of architectural styles across regions. Common features include a prayer hall oriented toward Mecca, a mihrab indicating the qibla, and often a minbar from which sermons are delivered. Many mosques also feature one or more minarets and domes, though simpler prayer spaces without towers are common in various contexts.

Functionally, massiidid are centers of religious life for their communities. They host the five daily prayers and the Friday congregational prayer, known as Jumu’ah.
