Manuaalivaihteisto, often referred to as a manual transmission or stick shift, is a type of automotive gearbox that requires the driver to manually change gears. Unlike automatic transmissions, which shift gears without driver intervention, a manual transmission relies on the driver operating a clutch pedal and a gear shifter. The clutch pedal disconnects the engine from the transmission, allowing the driver to select a different gear ratio. Once the desired gear is selected, the driver releases the clutch pedal, reconnecting the engine and allowing power to be transmitted to the wheels at the new ratio.

The primary components of a manual transmission include gears, shafts, and synchronizers. Gears are arranged on shafts, and different gear combinations create different ratios, affecting the vehicle's speed and torque. Synchronizers are crucial for smooth gear changes. They work to match the speed of the selected gear with the speed of the shaft before engagement, preventing grinding and facilitating a seamless transition.

Manual transmissions offer several advantages. They often provide greater driver control over the vehicle's performance, allowing for more precise acceleration and deceleration. They can also be more fuel-efficient than older automatic transmissions, although modern automatics have significantly closed this gap. Historically, manual transmissions were also simpler and cheaper to manufacture and maintain. However, with the increasing complexity and sophistication of automatic transmissions, manual gearboxes are becoming less common in new vehicles, particularly in North America. Their use is now more prevalent in performance-oriented vehicles and in markets where driver engagement is highly valued.
