Other, less common forms include cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) and hepatoblastoma, which primarily affects children.

The development of maksavähiles is often linked to chronic liver damage and inflammation. Major risk factors include long-term infection with hepatitis B or hepatitis C viruses, cirrhosis of the liver caused by excessive alcohol consumption, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Exposure to certain toxins, such as aflatoxins found in moldy foods, can also contribute.

Symptoms may not appear in the early stages, but as the cancer progresses, individuals might experience abdominal pain, swelling, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue. Diagnosis typically involves medical history, physical examination, blood tests (including tumor markers), and imaging techniques like ultrasound, CT scans, and MRI. A liver biopsy may be performed to confirm the diagnosis and determine the type and stage of cancer.

Treatment options for maksavähiles depend on the size, location, and stage of the tumor, as well as the patient's overall liver function. These can include surgery to remove the tumor, liver transplantation, ablation therapies (which destroy cancer cells), and chemotherapy or targeted drug therapy. Early detection and prompt treatment are crucial for improving outcomes.
