Magnetorheological fluids, often abbreviated as MR fluids, are smart fluids that exhibit a dramatic and reversible change in their viscosity when subjected to a magnetic field. These fluids are typically composed of a carrier liquid, such as mineral oil or silicone oil, and a suspension of fine magnetic particles, usually carbonyl iron particles. The size of these particles is typically on the order of a few micrometers.

When no magnetic field is present, the magnetic particles are randomly dispersed within the carrier liquid, allowing the fluid to flow relatively freely, similar to a Newtonian fluid. However, upon the application of an external magnetic field, these particles become magnetized and align themselves along the magnetic field lines. This alignment creates temporary chain-like structures within the fluid, significantly increasing its apparent viscosity and transforming it into a semi-solid or Bingham plastic-like state. The strength of the magnetic field directly influences the degree of viscosity change.

The key characteristics of MR fluids are their rapid response time to magnetic fields, typically in milliseconds, and the fact that their change in viscosity is reversible. When the magnetic field is removed, the particles de-magnetize and disperse again, returning the fluid to its low-viscosity state. This controllable and tunable behavior makes MR fluids highly versatile for a wide range of applications.

These applications include automotive systems like semi-active suspensions and clutch systems, where the damping force can be precisely controlled by adjusting the magnetic field. They are also used in industrial shock absorbers, vibration isolation systems, prosthetic limbs, and even in some forms of tactile displays for visually impaired individuals. The ability to rapidly and reversibly alter their flow properties offers significant advantages in systems requiring dynamic and adaptive control.
