Magnetism is a fundamental force of nature arising from the motion of electric charges. It is closely related to electricity, forming the basis of electromagnetism. Every magnet has a north pole and a south pole. Like poles repel each other, while opposite poles attract.

The source of magnetism in everyday materials is the movement of electrons within atoms. Electrons possess an intrinsic property called spin, which creates a tiny magnetic dipole. In most substances, these magnetic dipoles are randomly oriented, canceling out any net magnetic effect. However, in magnetic materials like iron, nickel, and cobalt, these dipoles can align, creating a strong macroscopic magnetic field.

Magnetic fields are invisible regions of influence around magnets. They are often represented by lines of force that emerge from the north pole and enter the south pole. These fields exert forces on other magnetic materials and on moving electric charges. This interaction is described by the Lorentz force.

The study of magnetism has led to numerous technological applications, including electric motors, generators, loudspeakers, magnetic storage devices like hard drives, and medical imaging techniques such as MRI. Understanding magnetism is crucial for comprehending phenomena ranging from the Earth's magnetic field, which protects us from solar radiation, to the behavior of subatomic particles.
