Magnekatsekuvantaminen is a Finnish term used to describe imaging technologies that use magnetic fields to visualize the internal structures and processes of living organisms. The term serves as an umbrella for several modalities, most prominently magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and its functional and structural variants, as well as other magnet-based techniques such as magnetoencephalography (MEG), magnetic particle imaging (MPI) and related methods.

Principles differ by modality. Magnetic resonance imaging relies on the alignment of atomic nuclei in a strong magnetic field and their response to radiofrequency pulses, producing detailed pictures of soft tissues. Functional MRI measures blood-oxygen-level-dependent signals to infer brain activity. Diffusion MRI investigates the movement of water molecules to reveal tissue microstructure. MEG detects the faint magnetic fields generated by synchronized neuronal activity near the cortex, providing excellent temporal resolution. MPI uses the non-linear magnetization of magnetic nanoparticles to image their distribution, offering high sensitivity for tracking contrast agents. Magnetic methods can be complemented by acoustic or ultrasound techniques in hybrid approaches, such as magnetoacoustic imaging.

Applications include clinical diagnostics in neurology, oncology, cardiology and musculoskeletal medicine, as well as research into brain function, developmental biology and tissue characterization. The non-ionizing nature of many magnetic techniques is a safety advantage, though there are constraints: MRI can be claustrophobic and sensitive to metallic implants; some methods require contrast agents or specialized equipment, and interpretations often depend on complex processing.

The field has evolved since mid-20th century, with MRI becoming widespread and newer techniques steadily expanding capability, resolution and functional information. Ongoing research aims to improve speed, specificity and accessibility of magnet-based imaging for broader clinical use.
