Magneettilevyissä, often translated as magnetic disks or floppy disks in English, were an early form of removable data storage. They consisted of a thin, flexible disk coated with a magnetic material, enclosed in a protective plastic casing. Data was written to and read from the magnetic surface using a magnetic read/write head within a disk drive.

The most common type was the 5.25-inch floppy disk, introduced in the 1970s. Later, the smaller and more rigid 3.5-inch floppy disk became dominant in the 1980s and 1990s. These disks offered a convenient way to transfer files, install software, and back up data before the widespread adoption of hard drives and later, optical media and flash storage.

Magneettilevyissä had limitations, including relatively low storage capacity and susceptibility to damage from magnetic fields, dust, and physical mishandling. Their data transfer speeds were also significantly slower compared to modern storage solutions. Despite these drawbacks, they played a crucial role in the development of personal computing and the accessibility of digital information. The technology has largely been superseded by more advanced and reliable storage methods.
