Magmafajtája refers to the classification of magma based on its chemical and mineralogical composition, which in turn influences its eruptive behavior and the rocks it forms upon cooling. The primary classifications are basaltic, andesitic, and rhyolitic.

Basaltic magma is the most common type, characterized by a low silica content (typically less than 52%) and high amounts of iron and magnesium. It has a low viscosity and erupts with relative ease, often forming shield volcanoes and producing lava flows that travel long distances.

Andesitic magma has an intermediate silica content (between 52% and 63%) and a moderate viscosity. It is less fluid than basaltic magma and can lead to more explosive eruptions, forming stratovolcanoes and producing blocky lava flows.

Rhyolitic magma is the most silica-rich (greater than 63%) and has the highest viscosity. Its high gas content and thick nature make it prone to highly explosive eruptions, often resulting in caldera formation and the production of pyroclastic flows.

These classifications are crucial for understanding volcanic hazards, predicting eruption styles, and studying the formation of igneous rocks. The properties of magmafajtája are directly linked to plate tectonic settings, with basaltic magmas often found at divergent boundaries and oceanic hotspots, andesitic magmas at subduction zones, and rhyolitic magmas commonly associated with continental rifting and the later stages of subduction-related magmatism.
