Maavärinategurid, also known as earthquake generators, are a broad category of phenomena or actions that can trigger seismic activity. These can be broadly divided into natural and human-induced causes.

Natural maavärinategurid are primarily driven by the movement of tectonic plates. The Earth's lithosphere is broken into large plates that constantly shift, collide, and slide past each other. When stress builds up along plate boundaries, it can be suddenly released in the form of an earthquake. Volcanic activity is another natural cause, where the movement of magma beneath the surface can create tremors. Landslides, especially large ones, can also generate seismic waves.

These include activities like the extraction of oil and gas, which can alter subsurface pressures and cause faults to slip. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, where fluids are injected into rock formations to release hydrocarbons, has been linked to increased earthquake occurrences in some regions. Large dam construction and the filling of reservoirs can also induce earthquakes due to the immense weight of the water on the Earth's crust. Mining operations, particularly those involving large-scale excavation or underground explosions, can also trigger seismic events. Even the testing of nuclear weapons can generate detectable seismic waves.
