Maanjäristysmittarit, also known as seismometers, are scientific instruments used to detect and record ground motion caused by seismic waves. These waves are generated by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and even artificial explosions. The primary purpose of a seismometer is to measure the amplitude, frequency, and duration of ground shaking.

The most common type of seismometer is a mechanical device that relies on inertia. It typically consists of a heavy mass suspended by a spring or a pendulum. When the ground shakes, the casing of the seismometer moves with the ground, but the suspended mass tends to remain stationary due to its inertia. This relative motion between the mass and the casing is then amplified and recorded by a sensor.

Modern seismometers are largely electronic. They utilize a variety of sensing technologies, including electromagnetic induction, piezoelectric effects, and capacitance changes, to convert the ground motion into an electrical signal. This signal is then processed, digitized, and stored for analysis. The recorded data is called a seismogram, which provides a visual representation of the seismic event.

Seismometers are crucial tools for understanding earthquakes. They help determine the location and magnitude of seismic events, study the Earth's internal structure, and monitor seismic activity for early warning systems. Networks of seismometers deployed globally allow scientists to triangulate the epicenter of an earthquake and estimate its depth.
