Maahanmuuttovirasto, known in English as the Finnish Immigration Service, is the state agency responsible for managing immigration and citizenship matters in Finland. It operates under the Ministry of Justice and is headed by a director general appointed by the government. The agency’s primary tasks include processing residence permit applications, overseeing the integration of foreign nationals, and handling matters related to asylum seekers, refugees, and labor migration. It also administers the Finnish citizenship application process and maintains records of residents’ legal status.
The agency was established in its current form in 2007, following a restructuring of several predecessor bodies.
