Læringtilrangering is a term of Norwegian origin that roughly translates to "learning to rank." It refers to a class of machine learning techniques used to build ranking models. Instead of traditional supervised learning where the goal is to predict a specific label or value, learning to rank focuses on optimizing the order of a list of items. This is particularly useful in applications where the relevance or quality of items is not absolute but depends on their position relative to other items, such as in search engine results, recommendation systems, or document retrieval.

The core idea behind learning to rank is to train a model that takes a query and a set of documents as input and outputs a ranked list of those documents. The training process involves using labeled data, where the labels indicate the relative order or relevance of documents for specific queries. There are generally three main approaches to learning to rank: point-wise, pair-wise, and list-wise. Point-wise methods treat each document independently, trying to predict its relevance score. Pair-wise methods focus on predicting which of two documents is more relevant. List-wise methods consider the entire list of documents for a query simultaneously, directly optimizing a ranking metric. The objective is to learn a scoring function that accurately reflects human judgment or desired ordering.
