läänestumine

Läänestumine is an Estonian term that broadly refers to the process of westernization, particularly the adoption of Western European cultural, political, and economic influences. This phenomenon has been a significant aspect of Estonian history, especially following periods of foreign rule. After centuries under Danish, Swedish, German, and Russian domination, Estonia has consistently looked towards Western Europe for models of development and societal organization.

The concept gained particular prominence in the late 20th century as Estonia re-established its independence. During the Soviet era, Estonian culture and society were subject to strong Soviet influences. Following the Singing Revolution and the restoration of independence in 1991, there was a deliberate and rapid shift towards integrating with Western institutions and adopting Western norms. This included joining organizations like the European Union and NATO, implementing market economy principles, and embracing Western democratic values.

Läänestumine encompasses more than just political and economic alignment. It also involves the influx of Western media, consumer goods, lifestyles, and artistic expressions.
