They are classified mainly by the route of administration and by their physical state. The most common oral forms include tablets and capsules, which are orally disintegrating, effervescent, or coated. Liquid preparations such as solutions, suspensions, and syrups allow precise dosage adjustments and are preferred for patients with swallowing difficulties.

Topical forms encompass creams, ointments, lotions, gels, and solutions applied to the skin or mucous membranes for local or systemic absorption. Transdermal patches deliver medication through the skin over an extended period, providing steady plasma levels.

Parenteral forms, such as injections, are administered directly into the circulatory system through intravenous, intramuscular, or subcutaneous routes, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract for rapid or controlled release. Injectable solutions, suspensions, and emulsions are common.

Inhalation forms include aerosols, dry powder inhalers, and nebulizer solutions, delivering drugs to the respiratory tract for local or systemic effects.

Other routes include rectal (suppositories, enemas), nasal (sprays, drops), and sublingual or buccal preparations that dissolve under the tongue or cheek for rapid absorption. The choice of drug form depends on factors such as drug properties, therapeutic objective, patient compliance, and safety concerns. Appropriate formulation enhances bioavailability, reduces side effects, and improves patient adherence.
