Lämpömäärä, often translated as heat quantity or simply heat, is a term used in thermodynamics and physics to describe the amount of thermal energy transferred between objects or systems due to a temperature difference. It is a measure of the energy that flows from a hotter body to a colder body.

Lämpömäärä is distinct from temperature, which is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles within a substance. While temperature indicates how hot or cold something is, lämpömäärä quantifies the energy that is exchanged as a result of that temperature difference.

The SI unit for lämpömäärä is the joule (J), just like for other forms of energy. However, historically, other units like calories (cal) and kilocalories (kcal) were also commonly used. One calorie is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius at standard atmospheric pressure.

The amount of lämpömäärä transferred depends on several factors, including the temperature difference, the mass of the substance, and its specific heat capacity. Specific heat capacity is a property of a material that indicates how much heat energy is needed to raise the temperature of a unit mass of that substance by one degree Celsius.

When an object absorbs heat, its lämpömäärä increases, typically leading to an increase in temperature or a change in its physical state (e.g., melting or boiling). Conversely, when an object releases heat, its lämpömäärä decreases, usually resulting in a drop in temperature or a change of state in the opposite direction (e.g., freezing or condensation).
