Lämpömittari, commonly known as a thermometer in English, is a device used to measure temperature. It works by utilizing a substance that changes predictably with temperature. The most common type historically, and still widely recognized, is the mercury thermometer. In this design, mercury is contained within a sealed glass tube with a calibrated scale. As the temperature rises, the mercury expands and rises up the tube, indicating the temperature on the scale. Similarly, as the temperature falls, the mercury contracts and the level drops.
Other types of thermometers exist, such as alcohol thermometers, which use colored alcohol instead of mercury
