Lämpökuormitus refers to the amount of heat that enters or leaves a building or a specific space within a building. It is a critical factor in building design and energy management, influencing heating and cooling requirements, as well as overall comfort.

Heat can enter a building through several pathways. Solar radiation passing through windows is a significant contributor, especially during sunny periods. Heat also conducts through the building envelope, including walls, roofs, and floors, driven by temperature differences between the interior and exterior. Infiltration, the uncontrolled flow of outside air into the building, also brings heat with it, as does exfiltration, the escape of conditioned air. Internal heat gains from occupants, lighting, and equipment are also part of the total heat load.

Conversely, heat can be lost from a building, primarily through conduction and infiltration when the interior temperature is higher than the exterior.

Accurately calculating heat loads is essential for sizing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Oversized systems can lead to inefficient operation and short cycling, while undersized systems may fail to maintain desired temperatures. Building codes and energy efficiency standards often specify maximum allowable heat loads.

Understanding and managing heat loads helps optimize energy consumption, reduce operational costs, and improve the thermal comfort of building occupants. Techniques to reduce heat loads include improving insulation, using energy-efficient windows, shading devices, and controlling ventilation rates.
