The term covers activities such as shopping for groceries, using local services, commuting to work or school, accessing healthcare, and engaging in recreation within walking or cycling distance. It also concerns time-use patterns and observable flows of people in a neighborhood, often studied with GIS and mobility data to map "activity spaces" that derive from where people live and work.

Urban planning and policy use the concept to evaluate livability, accessibility of everyday services, and resilience to disruptions. It informs design of mixed-use neighborhoods, pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly streets, reliable local transit, and planning of local markets and schools.
