Lähestymisanturi, also known as a proximity sensor, is a non-contact device used to detect the presence of objects within a certain range. It emits a signal, such as an electromagnetic field, light beam, or ultrasonic wave, and monitors the reflected signal. When an object enters the sensor's field of detection, the reflected signal changes, triggering an output from the sensor. This output can then be used to control other devices or systems.

They can be through-beam (sender and receiver separate), retro-reflective (sender and receiver together, with a reflector), or diffuse-reflective (object itself acts as the reflector). Ultrasonic proximity sensors emit sound waves and measure the time it takes for the echo to return, thus determining the distance to an object.

They are also found in consumer electronics, like smartphones that turn off the screen when held to the ear, and in security systems.
