Läheisyysanturit, known in English as proximity sensors, are electronic devices designed to detect the presence of nearby objects without physical contact. They are commonly used in a wide variety of applications across industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and consumer electronics. The operation of a proximity sensor typically involves emitting a field or beam of electromagnetic radiation, light, or acoustic waves, and then detecting alterations in this field, beam, or waves that indicate the presence of an object.

There are several common types of proximity sensors, each utilizing different technologies. Inductive proximity sensors detect metallic objects by creating a high-frequency electromagnetic field. When a metallic object enters this field, it causes eddy currents that are detected by the sensor. Capacitive proximity sensors can detect both metallic and non-metallic objects, including liquids and powders. They work by sensing changes in capacitance that occur when an object enters the electrostatic field surrounding the sensor. Photoelectric proximity sensors use a beam of light, either infrared or visible, to detect objects. They can operate in various modes, such as through-beam, retro-reflective, and diffuse, depending on the arrangement of the light emitter and receiver. Ultrasonic proximity sensors emit high-frequency sound waves and measure the time it takes for the sound to reflect off an object and return to the sensor, thereby determining distance and presence.

The output of a proximity sensor is typically an electrical signal that can be used to control other devices, such as relays, logic controllers, or indicators. This makes them invaluable for automation, safety systems, and object counting applications. Their non-contact nature ensures longevity by preventing wear and tear associated with mechanical switches.
