Lágyítókból, commonly referred to as plasticizers, are additive compounds used to increase the plasticity or decrease the viscosity of a material. Primarily associated with polymers, plasticizers work by embedding themselves between polymer chains, increasing their free volume and reducing intermolecular forces. This allows the polymer chains to slide past each other more easily, resulting in a softer, more flexible, and more workable material.

The most common application for plasticizers is in polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Unplasticized PVC is a rigid material, but by adding plasticizers like phthalates, PVC can be made flexible enough for use in products such as electrical cable insulation, inflatable structures, medical tubing, flooring, and synthetic leather.

The choice of plasticizer depends on the specific polymer and desired properties. Factors such as compatibility with the polymer, efficiency in softening, volatility, migration resistance, and cost are all important considerations. Beyond PVC, plasticizers are also used in other polymers like cellulose esters, polyurethanes, and rubbers to achieve various material characteristics.

While highly effective, some plasticizers, particularly certain phthalates, have raised environmental and health concerns due to potential migration from products and endocrine-disrupting properties. This has led to increased research and development of alternative, safer plasticizer options.
